The Sims 2 for Nintendo DS is the first DS game of The Sims 2. Like the many of the console games it takes place in Strangetown with some of the same faces.

The player's character arrives in Strangetown after crashing their car. The local old guy Jebidiah S. Jerky, who informs them that 'your engine has more holes than a donut shop,' suggests they should probably check in at the local hotel. An interesting coincidence is that the manager of the hotel left the previous day and has left a note at the check-in desk addressed to the player's character stating that they are the new manager of the hotel.

The aim of the game is to improve the hotel by adding extensions, furnishing rooms, completing goals, rescue guests or help them find missing objects and keeping the hotel clean.

There are three guests, Frankie Fusilli, Ava Cadavra, and Optimum Alfred, who have quests that must be completed.

Touchscreen[edit | edit source]

The game incorporates touchscreen with its game play. It is used for the menu, the minigames and the social interactions.

Real-time[edit | edit source]

The game plays in real time, with some options only occurring at night and others only in the day, some missions can only be carried out at night. Building rooms takes 8 real-time hours and the guests checkout on specified dates. The shop has new items every week and a limited edition item every month. Skill points that are found around the hotel only appear at certain times on certain days. Weather is random (the only weather is rain). Also, if the player changes the time backwards, the aliens will appear in every alien spawn point in Strangetown, so it's probably best not to travel back in time.

Social interaction[edit | edit source]

The player can increase their relationship with Sims by interacting with them, provided they are in town. Social interactions with them depend on their moods.

  • Neutral Sims don't need interacting with, but can be impressed for a boost in relationship. The interaction doesn't give a physical reward like money or gourds. They come up as 'happy' if messaged on the phone.
  • Angry Sims can send rude text messages at any moment. These Sims should be calmed down if they are guests in the hotel, as they can break furniture in their room, which cannot be repaired.
  • Sad Sims can sometimes alter the colors of the furniture in their hotel room if they are guests. They can be cheered up.
  • Loopy Sims need to be restrained, otherwise they leave ick piles on the floor that need to be cleaned.
  • Romantic Sims can be romanced, but the interaction gives no reward other than a relationship boost. If the player's Sim is male, they can only romance females (and vice versa). Some Sims can't be romanced, which are Lord Mole, Optimum Alfred, Bigfoot, Jeb, Pepper Pete, Emperor Xizzle, and Horus.

Depending on what the Sim is feeling, they will interact with the player in different ways (text messages will be in different tones, their greeting will be different, etc.). Items can be given as gifts to improve relationships. Sims waiting in the hotel lobby can be checked into any vacant guest room in the hotel. They will give a day that they are staying to, unless they are evicted by the player or choose to randomly leave (which is announced via text). They can also be checked into the Penthouse after all quests have been completed. Depending on their mood when they are checked out, guests will pay either the full bill or half, and may even tip. A brochure holder is in the lobby, Sims wondering around the lobby can purchase them for 15 simoleons each, which the player can restock for free.

Sims[edit | edit source]

Returning Sims[edit | edit source]

New Sims[edit | edit source]

Sanity[edit | edit source]

Sanity is the player's character's mood. Sanity can be increased by interacting with objects such as beds, benches, chairs, showers, toilets, fridges, etc. Icons displayed above the player character's head should be done immediately or else their sanity meter will drain. When the Sanity meter runs out, the player may be thrown in jail and lose two hundred simoleons for bail. If the player has insufficient funds to bail themselves out, Mamma Hogg will bail them out. Otherwise, they will pass out and are returned to the Manager's Suite by a ghost. Sanity can also deplete from spending time in the desert and the freezer. There is a hanging chunk of meat inside of the freezer, which can be interacted with for a large boost in sanity.

Being shot by robots, attacked by criminals (such as Crime Spree Bob's gang or Jimmy the Neck's goons), or being abducted by aliens also drains sanity. Sims that have been abducted by aliens will have difficulty walking until their sanity has recovered.

Sanity meters can vary in color depending on levels. Depending on their aspiration, interacting with Sims that are in a specific mood will eventually increase their level (for example, Sims with the fortune aspiration will increase their level by calming down angry sims). Levels can be checked on the Stat Panel in the Manager Suite under the 'aspirations' tab.

There are four levels, each with its own color as shown in the table below:

Sanity LevelColor
1Red
2Green
3Yellow
4Silver

Hotel[edit | edit source]

The hotel begins with only the main lobby, second floor lobby (with the small room by the elevator), the basement (where the furnace room and freezer are located), the manager's suite, the penthouse and sundeck. There are many other rooms which can be built, including a vault, casino, and art gallery. Certain rooms must be built when the three special guests are checked in. Frankie Fusilli asks for a vault, and the Bovine Shrine is a room requested by Ava Cadavra. As well as completing the in-game goals, it is the players' job to maintain the hotel. Building every room in the hotel will bring the rating of the hotel to 100%. The player can purchase rooms by talking to the Clerk in the City Hall for Simoleons, and Tristan Legend will build it over the next 8 hours.

There are three extra rooms that can be built for guests to stay in, which are the Jungle Guest Room, the Deluxe Guest Room, and the Modern Guest Room, all found on the 2nd Floor Lobby. Inside of the Atrium, there is the Sax Lounge, the Art Gallery, the Asian Emporium, the Casino, the Spa and Gym, and the Lion Lounge. The basement holds the Bovine Shrine, the Rat Cave, the Vault, the Secret Warehouse, and the Government Lab. The Rat Cave costs §3,500 to build; however, Tristan will build it for free if it hasn't been bought by the final fight.

Skill points[edit | edit source]

There are 5 types of skill points: Body, Business, Charisma, Creativity, and Mechanical.

Skill points, when they appear, will remain in the same location for 8 hours, changing at 8 a.m., 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. Only one skill point of each type can be found at a certain time, day and location. There is no other way to build skills in the game. The player needs to reach level 5 in the Mechanical skill by the end of the game to complete a task.

Note that a bug exists to take a skill point as many times as you want: before taking it, shoot it with the Super Drencher (the lock needs to be activated), take it, now go out of the room and enter again. The Skill point will be there again, this can be repeated for an unlimited amount of times.

Earning Simoleons[edit | edit source]

Sims

Players can earn Simoleons by getting guests to check in the hotel. The more expensive the furniture is in the guest rooms, the more the guests will pay for their stay. Checking Sims out when they are neutral/happy is the best way to guarantee the bill will be paid in full, and if Sims are in a good mood they will often leave a tip. Keeping the brochure holder stocked helps to make money, as each sells for §15 each.

Alternate ways of getting Simoleons include; finding license plates and selling them to the sheriff in the jail, selling fuel rods to the clerk in the city hall, selling gourds to the lady in the Saloon, and selling UFO parts to the general store clerk, Johnny Smith. Odd things like rocks and spare furniture can be sold to Johnny as well. Calming down, cheering up, and restraining Sims will result in a reward, such as simoleons, fuel rods or gourds.

Players can also make Simoleons by creating art in the gallery, playing music in the Sax Lounge and the Lion Lounge by playing on the keyboard, or by winning Keelhaulin' Cards in the Casino. The metal detector can find things like mummified aliens and metal bars in the desert that you can sell to the shop clerk. Mummified aliens can also be dissected in a minigame inside of the Government Lab.

Once the player builds The Vault for their hotel, there is a money machine near the back where Sims can print Simoleons. However, doing this can get the player arrested. Copper, silver, and gold bars can be sold in this room for a larger amount than in the shop.

Ratticator[edit | edit source]

As the story progresses, there are more threats to Strangetown (Jimmy 'The Neck', Crime Spree Bob, aliens, and robots). These attacks are mostly random; however, time travelling backwards will cause an alien invasion in every available spawn point. These can be fought off by your Sim as the Ratticator. To unlock this, the player must have access to the Rat Cave. This can either be purchased for §3,500, or will be shown to the player for free by Tristan Legend if it hasn't been purchased by the third antagonist.

The Rat Cave is set up like a metal cage, similar to a hamster cage, with tubes leading to different sections. There is an area for the player's character to sleep, as well as a bathroom. Through one of the tubes, there is a large rat suit inside of a glass container. The player can change into this and can then defeat the enemy by scaring them, hitting them with the batarang and using sim-fu on them (which can be used by pressing the icon in the corner of the touch screen). The Ratticator is needed to complete the game, so it's a good idea to get used to the attacks.

Upon seeing the Ratticator, aliens, Jimmy the Neck and Crime Spree Bob will all flee; however, robots will still attack the player. Sims are also unable to be interacted with, as they cower away and yell. The player's mobile is also unavailable, although requests can still come through. Checking the tasks and avoid staying in the suit for too long is the best idea to not miss requests from NPCs.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • There is some speculation over when the game was set because of Johnny Smith and Tank Grunt. In The Sims 2 for PC Tank and Johnny are both teens, but Johnny is far closer to becoming an adult than Tank. At the start of The Sims 2 for DS, Tank appears to be an adult and Johnny is still a teen. This is unusual as it should be the other way round.
    • This may be because Johnny is an alien, however they age in the same way as human Sims in the other games.
  • The game shares a majority of the Sims from the GBA version, but they all own their own houses in the GBA game. This could mean it is either an alteration of the history of the GBA title or possibly even a sequel.
  • The only non-hostile alien in the game is Johnny Smith, who is actually an alien-human hybrid.
  • After the Frankie Fusilli part of the game is done, Honest Jackson will disappear from the game. If the player calls him, it will say that he is in the city hall. However, he will not be there.
  • If you 'block' an NPC Sim and force the NPC to walk to a wall, the NPC will eventually stop and will do an action showing frustration. This action also occurs when the player chooses the incorrect choice while calming, cheering up, and restraining the NPC.

  • Additional aliens

To get more aliens on your save, set the system clock forward by one minute. Load your saved game and walk around for a minute. Save the game, then set system clock back to real time. The bellhop should say that you are a time traveler and that the aliens have launched a full scale attack. When you see the clock, touch it or you will lose all your sanity.
  • Alien revenge

You can dissect an alien by getting an Alien Mummy and buying the Government Lab for 2,000 Simoleons. Get near the table and select 'Alien Autopsy'. You must be very still when doing this, you will damage the organs.
  • Aliens and criminals

Do not bother fighting the aliens or criminals. They will just go away eventually. Also, do not approach them. They will take you back to your room. To make them go away so you are not stuck in your room, save the game, turn off the DS off, then turn it back on. Change the time to what ever time you are supposed to defeat the criminals or the aliens. Start the game and walk around a little bit. Save the game, turn it off, and turn it back on. Change the time to the actual time and you are set.
  • Become an Alien

For this cheat it can only be done once! You cant do it twice or it will ruin your saved game and freeze the menu section when you want to use it.
There are 5 steps so do it exactly.
1. Make sure it is a new game and on the exact date and time. Go outside the hotel and down to the desert. (time i used was 4pm on a saturday 2008 31rst october this will work best)
2. Go to the lagoon area and wait 5 seconds and do this code...^ >< A X B Y > >, wait another 5 seconds.
3. Go up to your hotel room and sleep for 10 seconds.
4. Get up and go to the solarium and into the center.
5. Do the same code as mentioned in 2. (^ >< A X B Y > >) You will turn into an alien but it will only last 1 hour. DO NOT SAVE AFTER YOU BECOME ALIEN, YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR DATA! | Submitted by Jessica
  • Chocolate Milk

Buy a bar of chocolate milk from the sax lounge. Go to the cow field and give it to the cow. The cow will then go brown. Then milk the cow and you will have chocolate milk! | Submitted by kayleigh
  • Completion bonus

After you have completed everything in the game, check at the store every month or change the month on the DS system date until an object that resembles a tanning bed. Buy it and put it in your room. When you get in there, there will be a place to choose your skin color. The colors are green, yellow, dark gray, light gray, blue, red, pink, and orange. The color will wear off in one or two days.
  • Control crystal

Start the game and make sure you are on the 'Interact' slot. You will see a crystal on the touch screen. Slide your finger across the touch screen. The crystal will start spinning.
  • Custom music in music panels and radios

Record music in one of the lounges and save the song. It can now by played in music panels and radios.
  • Darkness

Purchase the Rat Cave from the town hall. After it is finished being built, wait until you get a call that a criminal is in town. Do not put on the rat suit, and find the criminal. When you find the criminal make sure there is a person in the room who needs to calm down, cheer up, etc. Go to that person and calm them down, cheer them up, etc. If the criminal gets near you while you are doing this, you will pass out and go to your room. It will then be dark everywhere. To reverse this, simply calm someone down, cheer them up, etc.
  • Deluxe Guestroom invisible wall

Go into the Deluxe Guestroom, then go to the right stairset. Walk down it, then try and go back up to the right of it. There should be a wall and you cannot go back up.
  • Desert aliens kill

Wait in the desert until your sanity disappears. You will be abducted and will walk like a zombie. Note: You can compare it with the mummy you will see in the desert.
  • Easy money

Set the DS system date to the year 2080 or later. Then, play the game. There should be an alien invasion and lots of dirt piles. After defeating the aliens with your water gun, your vacuum and take all the dirt. You should get valuable things, like glowing rocks (42 Simoleons), Shrunken Heads (50 Simoleons), and Precious Stones (over 120 Simoleons).
Go to the Art Gallery and paint. Only paint a dot, and if it says that is a masterpiece keep it. Do this on all of them. If they all are masterpieces, leave and do something. Someone should call you and they should have bought it for about 1,500 Simoleons or more.
To steal money from guests, check them in then evict them and keep doing it. You may run out of people in your lobby; just go into a room then go back in again and repeat. You can do this as many times as desired.
Pick up all the fuel rods you find and sell them at the Town Hall to earn money.
Build the Sax Lounge in the Arty place and play music. You do not have to do anything, just lead your Sim to the keyboard. You can keep your Nintendo DS on a charger and allow it to idle while playing.
When vacuuming if you see something you think is valuable, tap it with your stylus and drag it to the hole at the bottom of the screen in the middle. If it is worth something you will get money.
  • Fast Social

Note: Save the game before attempting this trick. This trick can only be done if you have Optem Alfred living in your penthouse, and if you have every room built (including the Bovine Shrine). Set the Nintendo DS system date to October 31 (Halloween) of the next year. Restart the system and start the game. You should have several messages. One of them should be the cashier at your hotel. He will say that a friendly ghost came to the hotel. If you do not get this message, change the date to one year in the future again and restart. Check for the ghost in these locations: Art Gallery, Mamma Hogg's Saloon, Hotel Lobby, Atrium, and Basement. When you see him, go to a person nearby and do a Social with him or her (Impress, Calm Down, etc.) while close to the ghost. He will watch and make the Social go faster. When the mini-game is done, you will now make the social go faster for every person you socialize with. Go up to the ghost. To the right side of the screen you will see the words ' Mood neutral' and there will be two selections which are 'xxx Ofix mood social xxx' and 'Give gift'. Select the first option. Note: If you select 'Give gift' your Sim will enter the Wight Abyss and not be able to get out. Your interaction with anything will not show up. Do not enter any doors or the game will freeze. Instead, reset the Nintendo DS and you will start where you saved, but will still speed up interactions. The game will also be odd and you will find new people. Note: Repeating the process may delete your saved game file.
  • Finding The Secret WareHouse

  • Free milkshake

Go to the part of town where all the cows are found. Go up to the cows, not the bull, and tip it over. After tipping it over and it is lying down, select 'Milk' to get a milkshake. If you just milk the cow without tipping it, you will get plain milk. You can sell it for 2 Simoleons at the store, drink it, or give it away as a gift.
  • Free Money

Once you have built the 'Vault'. Go into to it. ( If you dont know where it is, it is in the basement, down the stairs on your right. It is NOT a door..its more like a round metal bump sticking out). • Getting rid of Alien at hotel

At the start of the game Momma Hogg will say 'We should get a casino in the hotel'. Go to City Hall. Go to the man with the blonde hair. Select 'Build rooms' on the touch screen, then find the casino. Then, go back to the hotel. You will see Tristan Legend (the man who builds rooms in the hotel). When he takes you in the casino, you will talk. There will be a shake. It is an alien. When you go back in the hotel lobby you will see him. Go outside of the hotel. There will be a man who will sell you a water gun to make the alien go away. It costs 250 Simoleons. Buy it and go back to the hotel. Shoot the alien with the water. He will go away.
  • Getting things finished quicker

To get things done quicker, change the internal clock on your DS system. This trick works well if you want to get rooms built faster. Instead of waiting the normal eight hours, just set your clock ahead eight hours. If you need money get guests to stay, set clock forward the desired number of hours or days.
  • Increase stats

When you get your Hotel score to 100% and obtain at least four stars for your Hotel goals, go to the computer in your room and check out all stats to get an outfit. You can do this a total of three times, but afterwards your stats will keep getting raised. Also, you must have a good relationship with Mama Hogg and the Goth chick.
  • Learning secrets

The Sim characters will not tell you all their secrets until you become their best friend. Try impressing them and eventually you will get their secret information. Go to the happy face on the bottom screen and try looking for glowing question marks. Tap them to find out their biggest secret. Note: Try getting Honest Jackson's secret information before he leaves or you will never get again.

  • Mummified Alien

Go into the Desert with your Metal Detector. Find the crashed space ship and use your Metal Detector in that area. You should get a Mummified Alien, worth 375 Simoleons.
  • Rat Cave

When you go in City Hall, do not bother building the 'Rat Cave'. Tristan Legend will build it at no charge with additional progress in the game; however if you do build it, it will cost 3,000 Simoleons.
Use the following trick to get the Rat Cave for free. Do not buy the Rat Cave. Tristan Legend will call you and say that he has something to show you. You will then go to the basement. He then shows you that he built the Rat Cave.
  • Refill sanity meter quicker

In the basement of the hotel, turn to your right. Go down the hall and enter the door at the end of the hall and you will be in a freezer. A piece of meat will be hanging from the ceiling. Go up to it and punch it. Your sanity meter will refill faster than normal.

  • Time travelling

Don't time travel on Sims 2 because it wrecks your game. The first day I got it I built a room and it said it would be ready in 8 hours. I changed my ds clock eight hours later went on Sims I found that my room was built and set it to the original time. I kept doing this until all my rooms were done. The following day I went on and every time I went into my pockets it froze. In the end I had to get a new game chip and I had to start all over again. I hope you learn from the mistakes I made. | Submitted by Twilight

  • Urbz references

Some old characters from the Urbz (aside from Dusty Hoggs, Pepper Pete, Misty Waters, Luthor L. Bigbucks and Giuseppi Mezzoalto) can be seen but not spoken to. Detective D. Mann is in the jail, Cannonball Coleman is at the sax lounge, and Futo Maki is at the sushi place.
  • Walk slowly

Set the Nintendo DS system time ten minutes behind. Then, go back into the game. Somebody will call and say that you are an alien, and you will be able to walk very slowly. Take a shower to make the effects wear off.
